Reaching #1 on Google

Saturday February 23, 2008

I'm always looking for search engine optimization tips that are fairly easy for new bloggers to implement. I found a great SEO tip for bloggers who use Wordpress from Blogger MC that's very easy and effective.

SEO Tips Top Google Rank

If you use Wordpress, go to your user dashboard and click on "Options" in the navigation bar then select "Permalinks" from the Options navigation bar. Scroll down and select "Custom" for your permalink structure and type the following in the space provided: /%category%/%postname%

By making this simple change, the category you tagged your post in and your post title will appear in the permalink structure giving you two more opportunities for Google to pick up on the keywords used within your category and post name. Every little bit helps when it comes to SEO!

I’m trying to use the tip you gave in your article because I use Wordpress, but there are no such Categories that I see.
You can view My Blog and let me know what you think, as well as clarify your instructions. Thank you!

Gabriele,
You’re not looking for a category when you make this change. Go into your dashboard and click on the options tab at the top of your screen. Next, click on the “permalinks” tab at the top of your screen. Scroll down the page and select the radio button next to “Custom, specify below” then type the following into the box labeled “Custom structure”:

%category% /%postname%

Save your changes and go back out to a post on your blog. The structure of the URL for that post should now include the category name that you used when you wrote the post as well as the post name at the end.

Let me know if this still doesn’t work or make sense, and I’ll put together a step-by-step tutorial.
