5 Things that Happen Behind the Scenes When You Publish a Blog Post
The Transparent Technical Side of Blogging

By Susan Gunelius, About.com

When you write a blog post and hit the publish button, that post typically appears at the top of your blog's home page for all the world to see. Did you know that's not all that happens to it? Behind the scenes, several technical tasks are automatically completed. Read on to learn what exactly happens behind the scenes when you publish a blog post.

1. The Post is Added to Your Blog's Archive

Every blog is set up to display a certain number of posts on the home page. Older posts are still available online and can easily be accessed through your blog's archives. That's why it's important to include links to your blog archives in your blog's sidebar or somewhere that it's easy to find them.

2. The Post is Displayed in Feed Readers

Anyone who subscribes to your blog's feed will automatically see new posts that you publish appear in their feed readers. There are no extra steps that you need to complete. Your blogging program automates the process for you.

3. Emails are Sent to Anyone Who Subscribes to Your Blog Via Email

Anyone who subscribes to your blog via email automatically receives a new email message in their inbox when you publish a new blog post.

4. Search Engines are Pinged

Each time you publish a new blog post, your blogging software pings search engines and other services such as Technorati, that are set up to receive pings. The ping notifies those sites that your blog has new content.

5. Your Post Can Be Indexed by Search Engines

Search engines periodically scan the web to index pages. Once your post is published, it can be indexed, making it available in keyword searches conducted on those search engines.
